Recap of my ride down the Coast
It started with me showing up on Sunday the 6th as
planned, the one day I picked was the same day they decided to do
maintenance on the tracks so the train wasn't running. First
thing learned here, make sure the train is running? Ended up
doing a 60 mile ride with another group and I figured I'd give it a go on
the next day (Monday)
Monday morning, here comes the train, have my ticket in hand and ready to get on the train. Found out really quick that out of the whole train, they only have room for 6 bicycles. The 6:45 train was full with the six bikes, so I had to wait for the 7:39 Finally, I got on the train and am heading to Anaheim. So what did I learn here, we can't count on getting all bikes on the train and will have to come up with an alternate way for getting the bikes to Anaheim as more people sign up for this trip.
After a nice hour and a half train ride, I made it to Anaheim and am on my bike by 9:20am. Weather was overcast all the way so my clothing choice for me was good, arm warmers, vest, and full finger gloves. Once I was on the road, I soon realized that this ride I thought was going to be 100 miles was only going to be 80. So my thought was let's pick up the pace and see what kind of time I can do this ride in. I was back at my truck in Solana Beach right at 2:00pm. I did the 80 miles in 4:09 with an average speed of 19.1. Needless to say, I was a bit tired and sore afterwards, but the next two day's are my day's off from riding so I can recover.
But I did the ride, found out the necessary things I
needed to know in order to have other people sign up and join me for the
next time which is scheduled for August 8th. Now that you know more,
you can sign up for the next trip.

Ride the train and ride the Coast

I know this is short notice, but on Sunday, June 6th 2010, I'll be taking the Coaster up to Anaheim and then riding my bike back down the coast. This is my first time doing this on my own, so it will be a new adventure. I've done this before with other groups but never on my own. This will be somewhat of a Scout Mission to see how long it takes to get there, food stops distance, and anything else I may need to know before really publishing this. So if you're up for an adventure, here's the information that I have so far.
763 Pacific Surfliner:
Departs 6:45 AM from Solana Beach, cost $19.00
Make sure you bring your ID and a helmet to get through Camp Pendleton
The trip takes about 2 hours, we will travel with our bikes on the train, get off, hit the bathroom and start the ride. From past experience, this is a great ride, not too difficult other than the distance. From Anaheim to Solana Beach is just over 90 miles, and if you want to ride all the way back to San Diego, you'll be looking at 120 miles. Parking is good in both locations. I personally will be getting on the train from Downtown if anyone else cares to join me. And for anyone in the Anaheim area that would like to ride down the coast and then take the train home, you're more than welcome. We should be rolling out from Anaheim Station around 9:00 AM.
As I said, this is my first time doing this, you may want to make some calls in advance just like I'll be doing so you get the information first hand.
Hope to see some others out there with me, please RSVP to if you think you'll make it so we know to look for you. dplummer@wheelsonwheels.com or call 619-449-1076
