So here I am in Brisbane which is about 100km inland from the Gold Coast. What a city, I'm always amazed with my travels, and with San Diego claming to be one of Americas finest city's, why can't San Diego implement some of the things that other countries do?
So
the first night, my roommate (our photographer) and I decided to walk into town.
They have these pedestrian bridges just for the reason, of keeping people off the
main roads and connecting people to the downtown via walking or riding. What a nice skyline of the city, about 2km from where were staying, so we enjoyed a nice evening walk
into
town. Of course, once there, we had to take in some of the sites and have
a cold one for you all back home. I had a beer called a
Fat Yak, something I've never heard of so I thought I'd have a go of it.
Not bad, very similar to a Fat Tire. The town here reminds me very much of
London with what they call the South Bank. The city really has done a lot
for the public and is very family oriented which is nice to see. The first
night we were here, we walked across the bridge not really knowing our
direction, and then
on
the way back came a different way and came across these public pools.
These pools are amazing, one large one
and
then two smaller ones for the kids, along with a kid playground and food
court for when you need to take a break. They also have this large Ferris
Wheel which isn't quite as big as the London Eye, but still very nice and really
something to see and high enough to give you a nose bleed if you're that kind of
person.
Next morning, not really knowing what's still going on, we decided to head
back over to town and see what the South Bank is like during the day.
What
a place to just go and hang out, with the Beach and the backdrop of the City,
it's really something. A bit of trivia, there's this river that
runs all the way around the town, and South Bank gets it's name from just that,
being on the South side of the City. Once we got over there, we saw some
of our boy's on their bikes so I quickly went back to my room to change and go for a
short ride around town to see what things are like. I have to say, it's
really different riding on the left side of the road, so I'm not too adventurous
going out on my own. But it was fun just to get out and spin the legs a bit.
But
the next day was another story. From walking around the other day, I came
back across a different pedestrian bridge, I noticed this bike path the went
along the riverside. and not knowing where to go, I decided that I would venture
off and see where it would take me. As soon as I got across, I found these other two cyclists heading the opposite direction and
decided to follow them for a bit. What a
treat, this bike path parallels the river for about 20km each way.
So
I rode this to one end, just turned around and road back to the other end.
So you're riding along the city, and parts of the path are like boat docks and
are floating. What a weird sensation when a City Cat (water taxi) goes by
and creates a wake and the bike path starts to
ripple. Really cool though, you're on one side of the river and the
city is on the other. It's quit a site and as I said before, the city
skyline is really something to look at. Very similar to Malibu with all
the Condo style living in the downtown area. So I made it to the one end
and am
now
heading back. It's not a fast ride because you're on the bike path, but
with the ride as pretty as it was, I wasn't in a hurry to get anywhere.
With the city being on the river, some of the highways are elevated as they go
around. So of course, the bike path has to go underneath. So you
just stay on this path for 20km or so and the ride is something to just take in
and enjoy. The weather here has been really hot and humid, but I
understand you all are having some weather of your own going on back home.
But it is summer time in Australia, and they say that this is pretty typical.
My trip here is almost over and I'll be back in the states on Friday, remember, the shop will be closed Fri., Sat., Sun., & Mon., so stop in after Tuesday and we can get all caught up. Until the next trip.
